ABOUT THE ARTIST

Albert Swayhoover was an American impressionist who worked exclusively in oils and was acclaimed as a master of the painting knife.  His subjects were the rural landscapes and seascapes of the eastern United States, although his artistry and treatment of these typical scenes is what makes his paintings unique.

The characteristic themes of his paintings are easily recognizable to the viewer – timeless seascapes featuring old houses on the shore among delicate beach grass, and old stone barns on snow-covered hills.  Swayhoover was able to capture the beauty and essence of his subjects giving the observer a feeling of returning to nature in a simpler time.

His focus was to gain a sense of movement in his artwork using a technique of “sculpting” with painting knives.  His skill resulted in a texture which helps capture the distinctive life of the landscape and has been described as a “very crisp” dimensional finish.

Swayhoover's remarkable portfolio of work dating 1968 to 2010 captures a lifetime of painting.  His landscapes were inspired by the places where he lived and traveled from Maine coastlines to Florida shores.
